At this week’s Ignite conference, Microsoft released some key Azure Infrastructure announcements and in this blog, we look at the top 10 key takeaways:
Azure Virtual Desktop: AVD is now available in preview for Azure Stack HCI. This allows you to have a modern cloud service for desktop and application virtualisation and, at the same time keep the data on-premises. For the Azure service, a new autoscale feature will allow users to automatically start and stop session hosts based on schedule.
Azure Automanage: Launched last year, Microsoft are adding support for Azure Arc-enabled server VMs on Azure Stack HCI and custom configuration profiles for Windows and Linux.
Azure Arc: 2021 has been the year of Azure Arc. It was released in preview a native self-service VM control to Azure Stack HCI and VMware vSphere. Arc allows IT operators to not only easily connect Azure services to on-prem environments, but also to create, configure, operate your VM inventory from Azure Portal.
Azure Virtual Machines: New v5 VMs SKUs added that deliver better price and performance, for most general purpose (e.g. Dv5, Ev5) and memory-intensity workloads (e.g. Ebs_v5).
Azure Disk Storage: On-demand disk bursting is now in general availability for Premium SSDs. Unlike credit-based systems, customers can burst their disks up to six times based on the demand.
Azure Gateway Load Balancer: A fully managed service that allows customers to ensure that traffic to an application endpoint is first sent to an appliance for traffic filtering or packet inspection, via a NVA. This is a single-click virtual integration with no need to create, modify and manage network routes manually.
Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets: Azure VMSS flexible orchestration mode is now available to all! This simplifies a lot the deployment, management and scalability of your applications, having full control of the individual VMs and very flexibility in operational changes.
Azure Network Function Manager: Now available to all, Azure NFM offers you a consistent management experience for pre-validated network functions to enable a private LTE/5G solution together with Azure Stack Edge.
Azure Network Security: Azure Bastion Standard SKU adds infrastructure scaling capabilities and reliability, in addition to connectivity. Also, in preview, the Application Gateway WAF have now better performance and supports CRS 3.2.
Microsoft Defender for Cloud: Aside from a new name (formerly known as Azure Security Center and Azure Defender), it brings native support for multicloud environments by having a seamless onboarding experience when customers connect their AWS environments.
